Issue #038 - New Visa LawsIn February, Ecuador announced changes in its visa laws - both for tourists and residents. It took a few months for all the details to come out. Here is what has changed...Change to Resident Visas: Previously, you could come to Ecuador, apply for residency and -if you qualified- receive a resident visa in six months or less. Under the new law, all those wanting residency in Ecuador have to first apply for a two-year, Temporary Resident Visa. To qualify for Temporary Residency you have to be able to prove a monthly income of $325 per person or savings of $9,000 (along with the usual requirements unique to each visa category). After the two years, you can apply for Permanent Residency. Change to Tourist Visas: For those who come to Ecuador for 90 days or less per year, you will still receive the 90 day tourist stamp on arrival. However, if you want to stay longer than 90 days, there are now options that allow you to stay up to one year as a tourist. Another change is that all tourists must now have a form of international medical or traveler's insurance.
